Press Release

Platform challenging the police. (2005)

We would welcome police involvement but believe it is fundamentally unjust charging for their services.

We are alcohol free! Every one works or performs for nothing! We are a Charity!

Many other events in the district are not charged even though they are commercial not charitable and sell alcohol. One recent non-commercial event had the same stage and P.A. company and several Platform crew assisting. It had much bigger crowds, alcohol was on sale, There was a police presence but no fence or searching people, conditions that are imposed on Airfusion, and there were no police costs. We believe Airfusion is an equally well run event and cannot understand why we are charged, especially when in 2002 we ran the same event for the Town Council, but called it "The Queens Jubilee Celebration". For this we had no costs or conditions imposed on us. We also attract an almost entirely local audience.

Our own stewarding is a minimum 15 day, 30 night, experienced and very high quality. (many councillors)

We have 6 professional S.I.A. registered Security at night but without police we would employ 9 at night and 3 in the day. (This will cost £800 more)

Qualified youth workers are in abundance, on site, (Youth group leaders, Princes Trust, Teachers, school governors, local government development officers, etc.).

A strictly applied health & safety policy with pre event training and a child protection policy, with senior crew having had training. First Aid and welfare are also well covered.

Teignbridge Crime and Disorder Partnership are on site participating. (+drug awareness stand)

It is acknowledged by the local authorities that we have significantly reduced crime and disorder in the town over the period when all the students have just broken up for the summer.

We can raise the money for the festival but not £4,889.00 for the police, £2,000.00 we would reluctantly pay, from our own pockets as the Town and District Councils will only give us funding towards the festival but refuse on principal to fund unwarranted police costs.

We give formal training for 6th formers and degree students, also work experience for 14 & 15 year olds, in conjunction with local secondary schools and higher education establishments. (Training for one of the South West’s biggest industries)

Still Photographs and more information can be obtained from our web site, www.airfusion.org

Please contact me for any further info, or better quality stills on disk, or interviews, if required.

Yours sincerely

Paul Stevenson (Trustee, founder of airfusion and over all manager of the event)

Air Fusion offers a programme of outdoor free performances – street entertainers, music (including pop and rock bands, junk bands, world music, tabla players, decks, rappers, dancers, percussionists, show time), theatre and some dance.  Most of this work was selected from young local groups, with professional acts booked to give a quality standard and varied event.

A major draw for many young people is the dance tent with known DJ's from the club circuit playing cutting edge electronic music to a packed floor.
Stagecoach Theatre Arts school hosts the contemporary stage, check out www.stagecoach.co.uk to see what they are all about.

The Production for Air Fusion is managed by Platform.  They have considerable experience of other festivals and venues.  Fifty young volunteers are involved in erecting staging backdrops, setting up lighting and PA systems, laying electrical cables, preparing signage.  During the event they operate the sound and lights, stage-managed programmes on 3 stages. assisted with stewarding and security and after the event they dismantle everything and clear the site.

The festival is licensed by Teignbridge District Council and close liaison with the police ensure excellent support from all concerned.  Fundraising, preparation and publicity is managed with support from the Leisure Development Officers, Newton Abbot and District Theatre/Arts Centre and the organisation itself.  Funding is obtained from various grants, Teignbridge District Council, Newton Abbot Town Council, Stagecoach Theatre Arts, local businesses with support in kind from Coombeshead Studios, TDC, Onyx, Tower Scaffolding, Ace Hire, Stage Electrics, Youth Council and other firms.

Photos of the festival can be viewed on the website www.airfusion.org

Come along and experience the electric atmosphere for yourself on July 16th, 17th and 18th 2004
